THE DAY OF THE DEAD IN ECUADOR

The day after we arrived in Quenca we visited the city cemetary to celebrate the Day of the Dead, a festival in central and south america where families visit the graves of their dead relatives to remember them by lighting candles and placing flowers and other objects on their graves. Some families brought a picnic and ate close to their departed loved ones.

Many of the graves were housed in cement structures with glass fronts which varied greatly in their decoration.
Some had simple names and a few lilies, others contained personal items such as barbie dolls.
Often battery operated lights were placed inside.
A grave in the ground consisted of a concrete stairway to heaven - a Led Zeppelin fan perhaps?

The cemetary contained a poignant glass memorial of etched figures of men, women and children, representing Ecuadorians who had died trying to immigrate by sea to the USA, a stark reminder of the desperation of many people who live in poverty in Ecuador.
